Help your county 4-H programs without spending anything extra.

The California 4-H Foundation is excited to share this innovative, grassroots method for raising money for local 4-H programs – meet your California 4-H GroundSwell Visa Debit Card. We’re working with GroundSwell, a social purpose corporation that empowers people to use their everyday purchasing as a force for good.

  • Good for 4-H youth: 4-H youth programs get the benefit of ongoing funding according to the participation in your county, to be used where it’s needed most in your county
  • Good for you: Awesome rewards, zero recurring fees, no credit check. Every purchase helps your 4-H county, but that money doesn’t come out of your pocket.
  • Good for your county 4-H Program: All funds raised go directly to your county.

Banks make $90 billion a year from processing our debit and credit card purchases.

Instead, what if you could turn your purchases into donations for your 4-H county, raising money without more coming out of your pocket? When you use the California 4-H GroundSwell Visa Debit Card, up to 1% of your total purchases goes to 4-H youth in your county.

The California 4-H community is leading the way to develop the next generation of True Leaders. The California 4-H GroundSwell Visa Debit Card is a powerful way for us to pursue this shared goal, without requiring extra time or money.

Imagine being able to provide an extra $10 a month to help 4-H youth, without it coming out of your pocket. Simply put $1,000 of your normal monthly spending on this card (e.g., online purchases, a few bills, groceries, etc.). It really adds up, if we all join in together.

Where does the money come from?

Whenever you use a card, merchants pay a processing fee. By using the California 4-H GroundSwell Visa Debit Card, up to 1% of your total purchases helps youth in your county. That money comes from the processing fee the merchant pays to the bank. So instead of all of that fee going to the bank – up to 1% goes directly to your county’s 4-H programs.

Free of monthly fees and no credit check.

Connect the card to your existing bank account – no need to change your current bank.

FDIC Insured. Real-time confirmation of purchase and balance via email.

Immediate rewards for food, shopping, travel, and even local merchants.
Here are some quick answers about the card program.
Can only 4-H families sign up for this card?

Families, friends, community members, even friends or relatives around the country can support your 4-H county by using a card that’s good for them, too.

What do we need to do to make sure the card supports our county?

Just tell your friends and family members to designate your county when they sign up!

Where do the card funds we raise go?

100% of the funds raised by your county will go to your county. That is why it’s important you select your county when you sign up for the card.

What will my county’s funds be used for?

The funds are unrestricted. 100% of the funds raised go back to the designated counties by participation. They will not be swept back into the Foundation if not used. Your County team will decide the best use of the funds and work with the local community to set funding goals and uses.

Can I choose my specific club?

The main reason this is not possible is technical on the card processing and reporting side. There is complexity involved with 57 counties, multiple clubs that can change, and multiple ways people would want to make selections.

Can a parent take a 4-H Card out in their child's name?

Currently, the card is available to people 18 and older under their name. GroundSwell has “companion cards” on their product roadmap for parents to get a card in their child’s or guardian child’s name. In the meantime, please start using the 4-H card for a portion of your monthly purchases.

Does this card benefit GroundSwell more than 4-H?

4-H receives the majority of the benefit. Why? GroundSwell is a social purpose corporation, directing the vast majority of debit card interchange revenue (before profit) to nonprofit partners’ causes, including 4-H.

For example, the average debit card interchange rate is about 1.2%. 1% of that goes to 4-H, or 80% of the revenue, on average. GroundSwell helps move these interchange funds away from large banks and toward 4-H county programs.
